The Today Sponge is a soft polyurethane sponge that contains a spermicide called Nonoxynol-9. The Sponge is inserted into the vagina, where it sits against the cervix. It is inserted before intercourse, and must be left in place for six hours after ejaculation. Protection lasts for up to 24 hours. It is available without a prescription and contains no hormones.
The sponge is 89-91% effective at preventing pregnancy. That means that out of 100 women who used the sponge as their only method of birth control for one whole year, approximately 10 of those women became pregnant.
